Liberia closes radio station
The authorities in Liberia have ordered the closure of a radio station, accusing it of operating illegally.
A statement by the Ministy of Communications said Radio Star was operating on a frequency allocated to another station. The manager of the station, George Bennet, said the frequencies the radio used had already been approved by the authorities. Radio star is funded by an the American aid agency. It started broadcasting during the run-up to Liberia's election last year. Correspondents say the closure of the radio appears to be part of an ongoing government crackdown on Liberian media. Earlier this week, the country's only printing house was ordered to stop publishing an independent newspaper. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service. |
