Korean-American journalist freed in Seoul

A Korean-American journalist who was arrested in Seoul after allegedly slandering a newspaper has been freed from jail on condition that he remain in the country to face trial.

The journalist, Richard Choi, who works for a radio station in Los Angeles, reported that the Korea Times newspaper was in financial trouble and was contemplating a merger with the Hyundai group.

The Korea Times filed a suit against him alleging slander, and he was detained. Mr Choi is expected to be tried next week.

People convicted of libel in South Korea face jail terms of up to five years.
