Kosovo separatist group attacks Macedonian police

An underground ethnic Albanian separatist group in the Serbian province of Kosovo has said it was behind recent attacks against police stations in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.

In a written statement sent to the BBC, the group, known as the Kosovo Liberation Army, or KLA, says it planted explosives which damaged police cars at two Macedonian police stations at Kumanovo and Prilep three days ago, and at a courthouse last November.

The BBC south east European analyst says this is the first time the KLA has acknowledged responsiblity for attacks outside the province.

The Macedonian Interior Ministry has said the KLA could not have planted the latest devices, but has given no further details.
