Turkey-Israel naval exercise under fire

The ships left Haifa for search-and-rescue manoeuvres

Naval vessels from Israel, Turkey and the US are extending their first joint manoeuvre into international waters off the coast of Israel, despite growing criticism.

The exercise, involving several ships and more than 1,000 seamen, was launched on Tuesday in the Israeli port of Haifa. Greece, Iran and several Arab countries oppose the move.

The latest country to voice its concern is Russia, which called it a step to the creation of an Israeli-Turkish axis which could harm the security of Arab countries.

Participating nations say the exercise, known as Reliant Mermaid, is designed merely to develop co-ordination in handling rescue operations at sea.

Last December, Turkey came under pressure from Syria to cease military relations with Israel during the summit meeting of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference in Iran.
