Chief Minister of Assam charged

Police in India have charged the chief minister of the state of Assam, Prafulla Kumar Mohanta, with fraud.

He's one of four politicians accused of embezzling thousands of dollars of public money over the past decade.

A court in the Assamese capital, Guwahati, rejected an application from Mr Mohanta for the charges to be dropped.

However, the federal police need formal permission from the state governor ,SK Sinha, before the case against Mr Mohanta and his co-accused can be brought to trial.
