A catch of herrings refused to give up without a fight - and sank the fishing boat which caught them, it has been reported.

The shoal of fish swam for the seabed when fishermen tried to haul in the net, dragging the boat down with them.

The 63-foot trawler Steinholm was fishing off Norway's northern coast when it made the huge catch.

"I have been fishing since I was 14 and I have never seen anything like it," the Steinbolm's 49-year-old skipper Geir Nikolaisen said.

The crew tried to cut loose the nets, but were forced to abandon the capsized vessel, which sank in 10 minutes.

No-one was hurt and the entire six-member crew managed to climb from their boat to another trawler.

It was not clear whether the fish escaped the net.
