Thailand wants review of IMF package

The deputy Thai Prime Minister, Supachai Panitchpakdi, has called for a review of the International Monetary Fund rescue package for Thailand.

Mr Supachai said the IMF had been wrong in its assumptions about the Thai economy.

He said that since August, when the package was approved, the crisis had spread throughout whole region and Thailand's economic problems could no longer be seen in isolation.

Mr Supachai said the effect of implementing the IMF's requirements had been more severe than expected, and that Thailand faced severe recession if it continued to carry out the IMF measures.
