Commonwealth observers criticise Guyana elections

Commonwealth observers monitoring the general elections in Guyana last month have criticised the way votes were counted and called for electoral reform.

In a report obtained by the BBC, the monitors said although the voting process was largely free of problems, the handling of the count by the electoral commission was flawed.

They said urgent consideration should be given to establishing a system which delivers results quickly and transparently.

Janet Jagan of the People's Progressive Party was sworn-in as president, but opposition parties are contesting the results, claiming the elections were fraudulent.
