More Hutu attacks in Burundi cause hundreds to flee

The Burundi army says there have been further attacks by Hutu rebels north of the capital, Bujumbura.

A spokesman for the Tutsi led-army said thirteen rebels were killed when they raided a military position during the night at Maramvyaabout ten kilometres 6 miles from Bujumbura.

The spokesman said most of the villagers fled and no civilians had been killed.

Latest reports from Burundi say hundreds of people from Muramvya had gone to Bujumbura, but were directedtowards another village Mubone, apparently because of fears by the authorities that rebels may try to enter the capital by mingling with refugees.

The Mayor of Bujumbura is reported to have met local security chiefs and district officials to discuss the situation.
