Brother of Ugandan president takes charge of Defence Ministry

President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda has continued a series of new defence appointments by putting his younger brother, Major-General Salim Saleh, in charge of the Defence Ministry.

The president's changes are part of a programme to modernise the army and give greater focus to the fight against rebels in the north and west.

General Saleh, a former military adviser to the president, has been commanding northern Ugandan forces against rebels of the Lords Resistance Army, who, Uganda says, are supported by Sudan -- a charge Sudan denies.

On Monday it was announced that President Museveni had appointed a new army commander, Major-General Aubakar Odongo and a new acting chief of staff,
