Kenyan opposition activist Balala freed on bail

Kenyan Islamic peacher and opposition figure Sheikh Khalid Balala was released on bail on Monday after being held on remand since his arrest last week in Mombasa on charges of incitement, the Kenyan news agency KNA reported.

Balala's bail application was granted by a judge at a court in Voi in Taita-Taveta District, the agency said.

"Balala is charged that on the eve of the election day, 29th December, along Haile Selassie Avenue in Mombasa, he incited members of the public to prepare bombs to attack prominent businessmen within the town and thereafter set fire on their business premises" , KNA reported.

"The case will be mentioned on 19th January, while hearing commences on 2nd February."
