Chinese unemployment very severe

Chinese state television says economic reform and the restructuring of state industries have led to severe unemployment.

It says more than a million workers were made redundant in 1997 because of mergers and bankruptcies -- the highest number in recent years.

The television said the Chinese government was doing all it could to help those who had lost their jobs.
