Uganda changes top army brass

The Ugandan President, Yoweri Museveni, has announced changes in the army's leadership as part of a programme to modernise the army and focus military operations on fighting rebels.

The President appointed a new army commander, Major-General Aubakar Odongo and a new acting chief of staff, Other appointments and transfers are expected to be announced later, including a radical streamlining of the officer corps.

The army is fighting two rebel groups in the north and the west.

Uganda accuses Sudan of supporting the rebels -- a charge it denies.
