Akram says death-threats prompted his decision to resign

Wasim Akram has resigned as the captain of Pakistan, following accusations of match-fixing and death threats from fans.

Akram, a veteran of 77 test matches and 238 one-day Internationals, said the decision was entirely his own, although he will remain in the team.

"These allegations have taken a toll on me," he said.

"It's sad that after serving your country with dedication and distinction, you get such treatment.

"Whatever cricket is left in me, I would love to enjoy it as a player, but certainly not as captain of Pakistan," he said.

Akram led Pakistan in 17 test matches, winning nine, losing four and drawing four. He is being replaced by the wicket-keeper and former vice-captain, Rashid Latif.

His captaincy was in doubt following Pakistan's early exit from the Champions trophy at Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates last month.
