Rangers Manager, Walter Smith, has indicated that Paul Gascoigne will be disciplined for taunting Celtic fans.

Gascoigne was captured by television cameras pretending to play the flute - a Loyalist gesture - to the traditionally Catholic Celtic supporters.

His agent, Mel Stein, claimed that the England midfielder was reacting to abuse from the Celtic supporters.

Smith said: "I don't want to start saying in public what will happen but he will be dealt with internally."

The Scottish Football Association is expected to decide this week whether to take any action against Gascoigne.

Scotland's football chiefs will first wait until they see the report from the referee, Hugh Dallas.

But it is understood they will not pursue the matter unless Strathclyde police act on a series of complaints and launch their own investigation.

SFA chief executive Jim Farry said: "It is up to the club. They are well aware of their responsibilities, so is the individual."

Stein refused to condemn Gascoigne's actions, saying: "Of course I am aware of the publicity surrounding this incident.

"But where is the publicity about the actions of some of the Celtic supporters, who were chanting: "Gazza beats his wife."
