Guyanese opposition leader vows to continue protests

The Guyanese opposition leader, Desmond Hoyte, who claims last month's general elections were marred by electoral fraud, has vowed to continue demands for a new vote to be held.

Mr Hoyte said his People's National Congress Party will carry on with street protests, designed to put political pressure on the new president, Janet Jagan, leader of the People's Progressive Partyto call new elections.

Riot police have broken up a number of demonstrations by opposition supporters since the results were announced.

The Guyana Supreme Court is hearing detailed arguments from both sides concerning the elections.
