Arms cache seized in central Greece
Police in Greece say they've seized an arms cache, including explosives and rocket-propelled grenades, on a farm in the centre of the country. Policemen raiding the farm at Dion south-west of Salonika found anti-tank rockets, rocket launchers, rifles, grenades and dynamite, as well as heroin and hashish. Many of the arms were Russian- or Chinese-made. The farm belongs to a woman of American origin whose Greek husband, under suspicion of involvement in arms and drug smuggling, died in an apparent mafia-style killing last week. Police are investigating whether the arms were connected to killings and robberies around Greece, or to a local protection racket. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
