Mother found after baby abandoned

A mother who abandoned a baby girl at a hospital with a note around her neck asking that she be looked after has been traced.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said that after police inquiries the child's mother was identified and located by officers.

The child was left in the women's toilets in the casualty unit at Chase Farm Hospital, Enfield, north London on Sunday night.

The baby, who is five-months-old, was examined by a doctor and was found to be healthy. She was then admitted to the hospital.

The police spokesman said that the child would be kept at the hospital "for the time being" while child protection officers and the local council are consulted.

A nurse had found her strapped into a car seat, wrapped in a blanket with a note which said: "Please look after my baby. I have to leave her like this. She is breast-fed. Take good care of her".

A woman was seen going into the toilets carrying a baby just before the infant was discovered at about 6.30pm. She was then spotted rushing away.
