Rush returns to haunt Everton

Ian Rush celebrates his 43rd FA Cup goal

Ian Rush returned to Merseyside to haunt Everton as Newcastle dumped them out of the FA Cup 1-0.

The Geordies' reward is a fourth round tie against non-league Stevenage Borough.

Rush and former Liverpool teammate John Barnes silenced the Everton fans during Sunday's disappointing rain-soaked encounter at Goodison Park.

The pair combined when Rush, who had come on as a substitute for Faustino Asprilla, forced home Barnes' looping cross, after Keith Gillespie's long pass from the right.

Ian Rush on why he enjoys playing Everton (25")
Since moving to Newcastle Rush had only managed one goal all season, but the 67th minute strike was his 43rd in the FA Cup - and broke his own record. It also gave Newcastle their first FA Cup victory over Everton.

Rush had regularly upset the blue half of Merseyside when he played for Liverpool, scoring 25 goals in 36 derbies.

Everton may consider themselves unfortunate to go out after putting plenty of effort and commitment into the match - Tony Grant and Duncan Ferguson could both have scored.

The fans' only consolation will be that Liverpool were knocked out of the Cup the day before.

Wimbledon 0-0 Wrexham

In one of Sunday's other third round games, Wimbledon were held 0-0 by second division Wrexham.

The Dons controversially had a goal disallowed in the last minute. The referee blew his whistle as Neal Ardley's corner came over and Marcus Gayle's header was too late to count.

Wrexham, who reached last seasons' quarter finals, had a good chance to go ahead in the first minute when Karl Connolly weaved his way through the Dons' defence before rattling the bar with a shot from 25 yards.

Non-league Hereford's clash at home to Tranmere was a victim of the weather while Spurs host Fulham on Monday night.
