Nigerian security men 'break up Ogoni ceremonies'

Reports from Nigeria say security forces have broken up ceremonies in several villages in the troubled south-eastern district of Ogoniland to stop celebrations for 'Ogoni Day'.

Reuters news agency quotes Ogoni activists as saying there had been a number of arrests.

There has been no confirmation.Activists of the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People, which wants autonomy for the region, organised the events.

The organisation was founded by the writer and activist, Ken Saro-Wiwa, who was hanged by the Nigerian military authorities in 1995, along with eight other Ogoni activists.
