Sunday, January 4, 1998 Published at 11:12 GMT World: Monitoring Iranian radio reports condemnation of Algeria massacres At least 60,000 people have died in the conflict in Algeria in the past six years
Text of report by Iranian radio on 3rd December
The spokesman for the Foreign Ministry of the Islamic Republic of Iran has strongly condemned the continued ruthless killing of defenceless women and children in Algeria, and has criticized philanthropic organizations for their indifference towards the crimes.
Mr Mahmud Mohammadi said that the crimes were suspicious and those responsible for them had remained unknown, adding that the continuation of torture and killing of innocent women and children in Algeria was repulsive and should be condemned, no matter who or what organization was responsible.
The Foreign Ministry's spokesman said the silence of international organizations in the face of shocking massacres was unjustifiable, and expressed the hope that an initiative by the secretary-general of the United Nations, the Organization of the Islamic Conference and other philanthropic organizations would find ways of preventing such violent and inhumane actions.
Saying that the Islamic world should not remain indifferent towards such shocking events, particularly during the auspicious month of Ramadan, Mr Mohammadi expressed the hope that those responsible for the massacres would become known to the people of the world.
