Australia pile on the runs

High fives for Shaun Pollock after he dismisses Mark Waugh

Mark Waugh scored 100 to help Australia gain a first innings lead of 105 runs over South Africa with one wicket remaining at the end of day three of the second test.

But South African fast bowler Allan Donald dashed brother Steve Waugh's hopes of celebrating his 100th test in similar fashion by bowling Australia's vice-captain for 85 in Sydney.

Australia finished Sunday on 392-9 in reply to South Africa's first innings total of 287.

The Waugh brothers added 116 runs for the fourth wicket, only their fourth century partnership, after Australia resumed the day on 174-3.

Ricky Ponting made 62 to add to his century in last week's drawn first test in Melbourne, joining Steve Waugh in a 98-run fifth-wicket stand.

Wicketkeeper Ian Healy was unbeaten on 31 at the close alongside fast bowler Glenn McGrath on three not out.

Mark Waugh's ton was his first in 12 tests and 12th overall in test cricket. He reached three figures with a glance to the fine leg boundary.

But five balls later pace bowler Shaun Pollock trapped him leg before wicket. Waugh's innings lasted 186 balls and included a six and 12 fours.

But it was not an easy ride. Both Waughs were unsettled by Donald's fierce pace.

They were both struck on the body before Donald eventually earned his reward, removing Steve Waugh with a superb delivery that moved sharply off the pitch to beat his forward defensive shot.
