Zambia 'regrets' UK cuts visit over Kaunda row

The Zambian Foreign Minister, Keli Walubita, has expressed regret over the cancellation of an official British visit in protest at the treatment of the former president, Kenneth Kaunda.

The British foreign office minister, Tony Lloyd, had said it would be wrong to go to Zambia while Mr Kaunda remained in custody without facing charges.

State radio quoted Mr Walubita as saying Mr Kaunda would be tried in accordance with laws relating to the current state of emergency.

Mr Kaunda was arrested ten days ago in connection with a failed coup attempt in October; he's repeatedly denied involvement.

A hearing challenging his continued detention has been adjourned until Tuesday.
