Austrian Cardinal resigns in sex scandal

The Roman Catholic Church in Austria says its former head, Cardinal Hans Hermann Groer, has been forced to resign as Prior of a Benedictine monastery Maria Roggendorfafter fresh allegations of sexual abuse.

The Catholic news agency Kathpress said the seventy-eight-year-old Cardinal had been accused by a number of adults over incidents that happened more than fifteen years ago.

The Cardinal was obliged to retire as Archbishop of Vienna in September 1995, when allegations were first made that he had sexually interfered with boys while working as a religious teacher more than twenty years earlier. .
