Ousted Afghan president in Tehran

The ousted Afghan President, Burhannuddin Rabbani, has held talks in Teheran with the Iranian leadership.

After meeting President Mohammad Khatami, Mr Rabbani said he hoped Iran and Pakistan would cooperate to restore peace in Afghanistan.

President Khatami said Iran would use its position as chair of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference to help resolve the crisis in Afghanistan.

Before arriving in Iran, Mr Rabbani spent a week in Pakistan, where he held talks on the establishment of a joint commission of religious scholars from the former government and the Taleban authorities.
