Guyana opposition challenges election result
The main opposition party in Guyana, the People's National Congress (PNC), which is mounting a legal challenge to the results of December's parliamentary elections, has called for a fresh vote.

Official results declared on Tuesday showed the People's Progressive Party/Civic with a seven-seat majority in the National Assembly over the PNC.

The leader of the People's Progressive Party -- the American-born Janet Jagan -- was sworn-in as the new president of Guyana just hours after an elections official declared her the winner on December 19.

Mrs Jagan is the widow of popular former President Cheddi Jagan.

Earlier this week police used teargas and batons to break up a demonstration by hundreds of opposition supporters claiming electoral fraud.

At least ten people were injured in the clashes, which took place outside the presidential complex in the capital, Georgetown.
