Should we pay more tax to use our vehicles?

Road traffic is on the increase and the environment is suffering - so say environmental groups. But a new report suggests that Britons are relying on their cars even more than ever.

The government wants to cut down the number of vehicles in use, and is considering plans that will affect road hauliers as well as car users. There is a suggestion that companies who offer their employees somwhere to park should be charged. Tax on company cars is likely to go up in the next budget, and the price of petrol rises every year.

And all in an effort to get people to use public transport.

Many people agree that something must be done to reduce road traffic - or at least to handle it better in Britain. Public transport fares in this country have just gone up again. Are we willing to pay the price for using our vehicles? If we paid more tax, would the money go to improving public transport?

Should we pay more tax to use our vehicles?
