Making a resolution may help or hinder.
Was it "to get fit"? "stop smoking"? "lose weight"?
Whatever your New Year's resolution it will undoubtedly be tested in the very near future. It may have been tested already. One of our journalists here at BBC News Online has admitted that he broke his resolution to stop smoking just four minutes into 1998! Is there any point making resolutions for a particular day? Some people say that resolutions are just a way of recognising something is wrong without having to do anything about it - and that if you really want to do something, then you'll do it anyway. Others argue it gives a chance to focus on a particular day, and that helps you stand firm.
