Officials in Sri Lanka say seven soldiers died and twenty were wounded when separatist Tamil Tiger rebels fired mortars at army positions near the northern village of Olumadu.
The village is on a strategic road link between the Jaffna peninsula and the rest of the country.
The Sri Lankan army has been fighting to gain control of the road and obtain a land route to the peninsula.
