The search concentrated on the Tomintoul area of Aberdeenshire

Seven hillwalkers, including a five-year-old girl, who sparked a major search after going missing in the Grampian mountains, have been found.

A police search and rescue team combing the area around Tomintoul, Aberdeenshire, found the group - four men, two women and the child - shortly before 3am on Thursday.

They are safe and well and being taken back to Tomintoul.

A major search was launched when the hillwalkers, comprising two families accompanied by two German Shepherd dogs, failed to return to their cars after setting out on a walk to visit a derelict lodge.

The group set out from Bridge of Avon, Tomintoul, at 1.30pm and had been due to return around 6pm on Wednesday.

A friend raised the alarm when the party did not turn up, and the Grampian police Mountain Rescue Team and officers from Speyside began the search.
