India acknowledges Kashmir death toll
The authorities in the Indian-administered Kashmir say more soldiers were killed in operations against armed separatists in 1997 than at any time since the movement was launched nearly a decade ago. A defence ministry spokesman said over a hundred members of the army were killed and about three hundred wounded. He said about a thousand militants were killed, and a further nine hundred arrested.
