Military tribunal for "coup plotters" in Nigeria
The authorities in Nigeria say the men arrested last month in connection with an alleged coup attempt will be tried by a military court. A military spokesman said the suspects would be entitled to a military lawyer of their choice. He said initial interrogation of the accused -- who include the number two in the military regime, General Oladipo Diya -- might lead to some of them being released before the trial starts. More than ninety people have been executed for coup plotting in Nigeria since the mid-1970s. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
