Doctors in South Africa successfully operate on Zambian Siamese twins
Doctors in South Africa have managed to separate Siamese twin boys who had been joined together at the head after a delicate operation lasting more than twenty-four hours. The eleven-month old twins are from Zambia, but the authorities in Lusaka asked Pretoria to carry out the operation as they didn't have the necessary facilities. Surgeons from the US, South Africa and Zambia said the operation was very difficult, but that the boys are now in a stable condition. One of the surgeons said it was the third operation of its kind undertaken in South Africa in the past ten years From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
