Emerson did not return to Middlesbrough after the Christmas break

Middlesbrough's wayward Brazilian star, Emerson, has been put on the transfer list.

The midfielder failed to turn up for Sunday's home game against Stockport and then rang the club on Tuesday to tell them he would not be returning.

Emerson is on sale for £4m - the same amount the First Division side paid for him from the Portuguese club, Porto.

Middlesbrough manager, Bryan Robson, has accepted that the 25-year-old is not returning to the Riverside Stadium after going home to Brazil before Christmas during a two-match suspension period.

Middlesbrough Chief Executive, Keith Lamb, told BBC Radio Five Live: "He is under contract to us and we paid a lot of money for him. If we can get that money back for him, he can go. We've made that clear.

"But his present actions won't have endeared him to any football club, I wouldn't have thought."

Emerson is thought to want to move to Spanish club Tenerife, who made an inquiry about him before Christmas, but they are unlikely to want to pay £4m.
