Record snow falls in Tibet destroy livestock, threaten population
Reports from China say Tibet is suffering its worst snowfalls since records began more than thirty years ago. About one-hundred-thousand livestock, mostly yaks, have perished. No human lives have been lost but reports from Beijing say Chinese troops stationed in Tibet have been mobilized to evacuate inhabitants from the worst hit areas. Communist party officials say the regional authorities have provided emergency supplies of food and fuel. Temperatures have dropped to minus forty degrees Celsius and ten centimetres of snow is falling every day in some areas. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
