At least 13 missing after Peruvian mudslide
The authorities in Peru say at least thirteen people are missing, feared dead, after a mudslide caused by heavy rain swept houses into a mountain river. Rescue workers say it is possible some of the missing villagers managed to climb to the safety of higher ground, but the Peruvian president Alberto Fujimori said he thought it likely they were all dead. Aid workers have been airlifting supplies into the area about a hundred kilometres from the capital, Lima. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
