Nobody is sure who planted the bomb on the bus in Delhi but suspicion has focused on Sikh groups

Police in India say the number of people killed in the bomb explosion on a bus in Delhi on Tuesday has risen to four.

At least two people were killed instantly and twenty injured when a device on the bus went off.

The device was planted under a seat on the bus, which had been packed with passengers. It smashed the windows and left a giant crater under the vehicle.

Police said the bomb went off just after a team of officers had stopped it for a random check and asked passengers to look for unidentified objects under their seats.

No group has admitted planting the bomb, which went off in a residential district in the west of the city.

It is the latest in a series of bombings in Delhi in recent months which have left at least seven dead and over 200 injured.

A Sikh separatist group said it was behind some of the previous explosions.

Delhi's Chief Minister, Sahib Singh Verma, immediately offered 50,000 rupees compensation for each of the bereaved families and smaller amounts for those injured.

Mr Verma urged Lieutenant Governor Tejendra Khanna to order a probe into the blast and said he regretted the police had not been able to find any clues to the previous explosions in the city.
