Cholera deaths in flood-stricken Kisangani
United Nations relief workers say at least thirty people have died in an outbreak of cholera in the city of Kisangani in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The area was declared a disaster zone after the river Congo -- which runs close to Kisangani -- burst its banks ten days ago and caused extensive flooding. A medical emergency centre has been set up in the city, and efforts are being made to maintain supplies of drinking-water. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
