Laos politburo members win assembly seats

Officials in Laos say that three members of the politburo of the ruling communist party Lao People's Revolutionary Party have been elected to the National Assembly in polls held earlier this month.

Around one-hundred and fifty candidates stood in the elections for the ninety-nine member Assembly but nearly all were nominated by the communist party.

Correspondents say the Laotian government was keen to fill the new Assembly with more conservative party veterans as the previous Assembly had challenged it over key issues in the past year.
