Friday, January 16, 1998 Published at 11:50 GMT Talking Point Has Diana's death changed Britain?
Diana, Princess of Wales died on 31st August 1997. Her funeral service was held a week later in Westminster Abbey. Now a memorial garden is being planned for outside her Kensington Palace home.
The event triggered an unprecedented display of public grief demonstrated by the thousands of floral tributes laid in her memory at Kensington Palace. Were you touched by Elton John's 'Candle in the Wind' or Earl Spencer's speech? Many commentators spoke of the change that had swept Britain as people found a way to express new-found levels of compassion. Others say the remarkable public and private reactions were only temporary and that normal British life has since resumed.
It seems that the Monarchy is truly trying to shift gears and become less remote. I hope that they have a successful go of it.
No, Britain and indeed the rest of the
world have not changed...
