French youth clash with police
There have been clashes in the French city of Toulouse between the police and youths protesting over the death of a young man in a police car chase. About fifty demonstrators set fire to cars and threw stones at the fire-fighters as they arrived at the scene. Calm was restored after the riot police intervened, arresting three of the demonstrators. The young man died on Monday as he tried to escape in a stolen car. The local prosecutor said it was an accident. There have been protests in several French cities during the past week over incidents involving the police. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
