India's chess grandmaster beats English opponent to reach final

India's chess grandmaster Viswanathan Anand has beaten off England's Michael Adams to reach the final of the FIDE World Chess Championship to be played in Switzerland on Friday.

The two were locked in a two-day battle which led to four drawn tie-breaks in the opening rounds in Groningen, Holland. The match went to a sudden death play-off with the score at 4-4. Anand took the sudden death to win through 5-4.

Viswanathan Anand will now challenge Anatoly Karpov of Russia for the International Chess Federation world championship to be held in Lausanne, Switzerland, on Friday.

Karpov had a bye to reach the final.

On the way to the eliminator, Adams, 26, knocked out the UK's Nigel Short 4-3 on Christmas Day. Anand beat Gelfand and Shirov in his previous rounds.
