A garden of remembrance to Diana, Princess of Wales, is being planned in front of her London home, Kensington Palace, where thousands of mourners laid floral tributes after her death.

The Royal Parks Agency, which manages Kensington Palace Gardens, has submitted a proposal for a garden to a Government committee which is examining how to commemorate Diana's life.

A spokesman for the agency refused to give details of the scheme, but it is thought to include lavish flowerbeds, a children's garden, walkways and areas where personal tributes could be left.

The committee, chaired by the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gordon Brown, and including Diana's sister Lady Sarah McCorquodale, is expected to make a decision on the plan early in the New Year.

Royal Parks Agency Spokesman Tom Corby said: "We submitted a proposal in very broad terms for a Diana memorial garden some time ago, but I am not aware of any decision being made by Mr Brown's committee."

The area in front of Kensington Palace became an impromptu shrine to Diana in the days after her death on August 31 as grieving people laid mountains of flowers, messages and cuddly toys.

Volunteers worked for three weeks to clear the bouquets after her funeral.
