The expansion plans represent an investment in Britain of around £85m

The fast-food giant, McDonald's, has announced an £85m plan to create 5,000 new jobs in Britain with the opening of around 100 restaurants next year.

McDonald's spokesman, Andrew Taylor, says most of the jobs will be for young people (1'37")
The company already employs 55,000 staff in 830 outlets in Britain.

The announcement on Tuesday came less than 24 hours after rival Burger King unveiled plans to open 55 restaurants in Britain in 1998, creating up to 2,000 new part-time and full-time jobs.

McDonald's will be expanding across the country, with a third of the new jobs in the south of England, a third in the north, a fifth in the Midlands and the rest in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
