Moi re-elected in Kenya

As counting continues following the Kenyan elections, provisional results have given victory to President Daniel arap Moi in the presidential poll.

The head of the electoral commission, Samuel Kivuitu, said no other candidate had a chance of catching him.

Mr Kivuitu admitted there had been problems with voting, but insisted it had been free and fair.

His statement came a day after Mr Moi's two closest challengers Mwai Kibaki and Raila Odinga complained of irregularities and demanded a re-run.

Kenyan election observers said that despite flaws, the polls produced results which, on the whole, represented the will of the voters.

The observers --from church and educational groups-- called on people to accept the results.

The outcome in the parliamentary elections appears evenly balanced, although Mr Moi's KANU party has claimed victory.
