Indian owl thought extinct found alive by American ornithologists

American ornithologists are reported to have found alive a small Indian owl thought to have died out more than one hundred years ago.

The National Museum of Natural History in the United States says they found a pair of the owls, near the town of Shahada in the western state of Maharashtra in India.

It said the find came after a twelve day search in November.

The species, known as the Forest Owlet or Athene blewitti, is reported to have last been seen in the wild in 1884.
