Top of the class, or could try harder?
The new Labour Prime Minister, Tony Blair, will never forget 1997, but as the year ends, things are looking less than rosy for his government.
The cabinet is split over cuts in benefits and there has been one backbench rebellion already. Geoffrey Robinson, the Paymaster General has had his tax affairs constantly in the headlines and the Minister Without Portfolio, Peter Mandelson, is experiencing a PR nightmare over his plans for the Millennium Dome. But the economy is healthy, unemployment is falling and the government is sticking its neck out over devolution and reform of the welfare state, so how do you rate their performance?
His style of governing is to make as little effort as
possible but with as much hype and glitz as
possible...
I am particularly impressed by Blair's handling of the Northern Ireland's
peace
