Election Commission in Kenya extends voting
The authorities in Kenya have announced that polling in the country's second multi-party elections is to continue for a second day, after voting in some parts of the country failed to take place. Ballot papers arrived late or not at all, as thousands waited to cast their votes in elections for president, parliament and local councils. The electoral commission says no counting will take place until polling is completed. It has blamed the confusion on administrative problems, but opposition parties and election monitors say the chaos was orchestrated by the governing KANU party. The BBC East Africa correspondent says that except for two deaths in western Kenya, the elections have been relatively free of violence. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
