Court decision due in Pakistan on eligibility of government candidate for President

A decision is expected today Mondayby the Pakistani High Court on whether the government's official Presidential candidate can stand in the elections due on Wednesday.

The candidate, Rafiq Tarar, was disqualified ten days ago by a Supreme Court judge, acting as chief election commissioner, for making derogatory statements about the judiciary.

The government is challenging the decision and has removed the judge from office.

The BBC correspondent in Pakistan says the head of every democratic institution designed to check and balance the government has now been replaced in the last few weeks
