Turbulence kills one and injures more than one-hundred airline passengers

A jumbo jet, travelling from Japan to Honolulu in the United States, has hit heavy turbulence, killing one passenger and injuring more than a hundred.

The turbulence caused the plane to drop suddenly three-hundred metres, sending passengers and flight attendants who were not wearing seat belts crashing into the ceiling and luggage compartments.

The United Airlines Seven-Four-Seven, which was about two hours into its flight, returned to Tokyo's Narita airport from where the injured were taken to hospital.

Officials from United Airlines and the Japanese aviation authorities are investigating.
